Hair Life Cycle

Hair Life Cycle

Every day, a person in the aisles of the norm can lose from 50 to 100 hairs. New hair replaces the fallen ones. Each hair has its own hair follicle in which a new hair is formed, which goes through several successive stages of development until it falls out. Each hair has its own hair life cycle of development which is divided into three stages: Anagen, Catagen and Telogen.

Anagen phase: This is the active growth phase of the hair follicles. During the anagen phase, the hair follicle cells divide rapidly, and the hair strand becomes longer. The duration of the anagen phase varies from person to person and can last from 2 to 7 years. The length of the anagen phase determines how long your hair can grow.

Catagen phase: This is the transitional phase following the anagen phase. The catagen phase is relatively short and lasts 2 to 3 weeks. During this phase, the hair follicle shrinks, and the hair strand is cut off from its blood supply. During this phase, hair growth stops.

Telogen Phase: The telogen phase is the resting phase of the hair growth cycle. It lasts approximately 2 to 3 months. At this time, a strand of hair remains in the follicle, but does not actively grow. After the telogen phase, a strand of hair falls out and the cycle begins again with the growth of a new hair from the same follicle.

The hair growth cycle is not synchronized in all hair follicles on the scalp. This means that at any given time, some hair follicles are in the anagen phase and others are in the telogen or catagen phase. On average, about 85-90% of the hair on the head is in the anagen phase, and the remaining 10-15% is in the telogen phase.

Hair loss is a natural part of the hair growth cycle and is usually not a cause for concern as long as it occurs within the normal range. On average, people can lose about 50-100 hairs a day through the natural process of hair loss.

What is difference between hair shedding and hair loss?

The 50–100 hairs we lose daily as a result of the ongoing hair growth cycle are commonly referred to as hair shedding. The hair strands that are shed during this phase are typically replaced by new hair growth, which is a natural procedure. Hair loss is the medical term for the ‘balding’ condition known as alopecia, in which the hair follicles start to shrink and fall out, causing the overall amount of hair to diminish.

What causes hair loss?

Numerous factors, some of which we can control and others which we cannot, can contribute to hair loss, including:

  • Hormone amounts
  • Genetics
  • Medical issues
  • Medication
  • Some hair treatments

What are the main issues associated with hair loss?

Excessive hair loss or shedding beyond the normal range can be a sign of an underlying issue. There are several types of hair loss, including:

Androgenetic Alopecia (Male and Female Pattern Baldness): This is the most common type of hair loss and is hereditary. It is characterized by a gradual thinning of hair, usually starting at the hairline or crown for men and diffuse thinning for women.

Telogen Effluvium: This type of hair loss occurs when a significant number of hair follicles enter the telogen phase at the same time, resulting in increased shedding. It can be triggered by factors such as stress, illness, hormonal changes, or nutritional deficiencies.

Alopecia Areata: This is an autoimmune condition that causes patchy hair loss on the scalp and other areas of the body.

Traction Alopecia: This type of hair loss is caused by excessive tension or pulling on the hair, often due to tight hairstyles like braids, ponytails, or hair extensions.

Medical Conditions and Treatments: Certain medical conditions, such as thyroid disorders or chemotherapy, can lead to hair loss as a side effect.

How does diet affect hair health?

There are factors that we can hardly influence, for example, the effect of medications, genetics, age. However, one factor that has a huge impact on hair health that we can control is diet. In order for hair to be healthy and go through the hair follicle growth cycle without problems, it is necessary to make sure that we consume enough vitamins, and especially if we follow a balanced diet.

How do vitamins affect hair growth?

The majority of hair lipids are saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, which means they play a key role in maintaining hair health and strength. As well as omega-3 fatty acids, which can help move hair follicles into an active growth phase, stimulating growth. Fatty acids can be found in fish (salmon, herring, sardines), extra virgin olive oil, walnuts and avocados.

What vitamins affect hair growth?

There are certain vitamins and minerals that can contribute to healthy hair, these include:

Iron – found in beans, dried fruits, red meat and fortified breakfast cereals.

  • Vitamin D – found in fatty fish, egg yolks and liver, red meat.
  • Vitamin A – found in cheese, fatty fish and yogurt, eggs.
  • Vitamin C – found in citrus fruits, broccoli and potatoes, peppers.
  • Vitamin E – is contained in vegetable oils, seeds and pumpkin, nuts.
  • Zinc – found in red meat, eggs and nuts, shellfish.
  • Magnesium – found in dark chocolate, nuts and whole grains, avocado.
