Dandruff is the general name for a scalp condition in which there is excessive shedding of skin cells in the form of small white or yellow flakes. Technically, this condition is called “seborrheic dermatitis”. Dandruff can be dry or oily, and it can occur in both men and women of all ages.

Dandruff types:

Dry dandruff: Characterized by small, dry flakes that usually come off easily from the skin. Dry dandruff is often associated with dry scalp and can be caused by insufficient moisture levels or improper use of hair care products.

Oily dandruff: Also known as seborrheic dandruff, it is characterized by larger, oily flakes that stick to the scalp and hair. This may be due to excess sebum production on the scalp, which allows certain micro-organisms, such as Malassezia yeast, to thrive on the scalp.

Causes of dandruff:

Dry Scalp: Insufficient hydration of the scalp can lead to dry dandruff.

Excessive sebum production: Increased sebum production can lead to oily dandruff.

Malassezia fungus: Normally present on the scalp, Malassezia fungus can cause a reaction in some people and lead to dandruff.

Stress and Diet: Several studies show a link between stress, diet and dandruff.

Improper Hair Care: Improper use of shampoos, conditioners, and other hair care products can contribute to dandruff.

Hormonal Factors: Hormonal changes, such as sex hormone levels, can also affect the scalp and cause dandruff.
